  • What are popular thermal insulation products used in the building industry ?

     

Answer:

  • There are two major categories of thermal insulation products, namely bulk insulation (the added R-value is directly proportional to the thickness of insulation products) and reflective insulation.

  • Bulk insulation products generally consist of:

o    Glasswool blankets and batts of bare face or laminated with aluminium foil, having thicknesses of 25mm / 50mm / 100mm at different densities like 10kg/m3 – 12kg/m3 – 16kg/m3 – 24kg/m3 – 32kg/m3 – 48kg/m3 – etc.

o    Rockwool blankets and slabs having thicknesses of 25mm / 50mm / 100mm at different densities like 40kg/m3 – 50kg/m3 – 60kg/m3 – 80kg/m3 – 100kg/m3 – 110kg/m3 – etc.

o    Polystyrene panels (Expanded Polystyrene & Extruded Polystyrene) having thicknesses of 25mm / 50mm / 100mm at different densities from 25 to 200kg/m3.

  • Among three listed types of bulk insulation products, glasswool and rockwool are specially recommended for thermal insulation application at residential, commercial, and industrial building projects due to their incombustible features; whereas most of polystyrene panels easily catch fire at about 340-350 degree C and emit lots of black smoke and toxic gases. In reality, when in fire, the fire temperature will easily reach over 500-600 degree C within 10-15 minutes of fire expansion.

  • Reflective insulation products are generally one or two layers of bubble polyethylene bonded to one or two layers of aluminum foil. Below are typical reflective aluminium bubble foils:

o    Economic: one layer of polyethylene film coated with aluminium particles bonded to one layer of bubble polyethylene, total thickness is 4-5mm

o    Standard: one layer of high purity aluminium foil bonded to one layer of bubble polyethylene, total thickness is 4-5mm

o    Enhanced: one layer of bubble polyethylene sandwiched between two layers of high purity aluminium foil, total thickness is 4-5mm

o    Superior: two layers of bubble polyethylene sandwiched between two layers of high purity aluminium foil, total thickness is 7-8mm
